Shoulder pain - Frozen shoulder

What is meant by a frozen shoulder?

Frozen shoulder is a progressive stiffness in the shoulder joint capsule that causes:

  • Pain when moving or even sometimes while at rest
  • A clear lack of range of motion (lifting the hand/rotating/reaching backwards)
  • Difficulty with daily activities such as dressing, bathing, and carrying objects.

It may sometimes be associated with diabetes or lack of movement after an injury/surgery, but it can also occur for no apparent reason.

Common symptoms of frozen shoulder:

Pain that increases when raising the arm or twisting.

Difficulty combing hair or getting dressed

Difficulty inserting the hand behind the back

Stiffness prevents you from raising your arm as you used to.

Pain while sleeping on the same side

Clear limitations in movement even if you try to “overpower”

Important note: If the pain is very severe after a fall, or there is sudden weakness that prevents raising the hand completely, or pain accompanied by severe numbness, a medical evaluation is recommended to rule out other causes.

Goals of physiotherapy:

Why is home treatment beneficial?

Because the patient needs training in his daily environment:

the way he sleeps, the way he sits, the use of his hand in the kitchen or at work, and the height of objects in the house. Inside the house we observe the movements that increase the pain and modify them, and we choose exercises that suit your tools and your space, which helps in steady improvement and reducing relapse.
