Ankle sprain
What is an ankle sprain?
An ankle sprain occurs when the ligaments of the ankle are stretched or torn due to a sudden movement (often an inward twisting of the foot).
This can cause pain, swelling, bruising, and decreased stability, and in some cases, can lead to recurrent sprains if not properly rehabilitated.
When do you need physical therapy for a sprained ankle?
Pain when walking or standing
Swelling or bruising around the ankle
Instability or fear of putting weight on the foot
Difficulty going up/down stairs
Frequent sprains or the feeling that your ankle is “betraying” you
Persistent pain weeks after injury
Important note: If there is very severe pain , total inability to bear weight , obvious deformity , or suspicion of a fracture—it is preferable to have a medical/X-ray evaluation done before starting rehabilitation.
