Stroke / Cerebral Infarction
What is a stroke?
A stroke is an emergency condition that occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, causing rapid damage to brain cells due to lack of oxygen, and requires immediate medical intervention.
Why is rehabilitation after a stroke important?
Power and movement control
Balance and risk of falling
Walking pattern and stride length
Hand, shoulder, and arm movement
The ability to move between positions (bed/chair/bathroom)
Important note: Physical therapy helps to retrain the brain and body to move, and gradually improve functions.
Goals of physiotherapy:
- Safe training to stand and transfer from bed to chair
- Balance and fall prevention exercises
- Walking training and gradually restoring gait pattern
- Strengthening weak muscles and improving stability
- Flexibility exercises to reduce stiffness and tightness
- Upper limb and hand training (as needed)
- A simple home exercise program for the days between sessions
Why is home rehabilitation beneficial?
Because the patient needs training in his real environment: the bathroom, the bed, the sofa, the hallways, and the stairs if there are any, inside the house we train the patient on the same daily tasks and suggest simple modifications that reduce falls and increase safety (arranging the place, removing obstacles, leaning points).
