Sciatica
What is sciatica?
Sciatica is pain caused by irritation or pressure on the sciatic nerve, and is often caused by:
- Muscle strain or poor posture can compress a nerve.
- Slipped disc/herniated disc in the lower back (depending on the case)
- Spinal canal narrowing or spinal changes
- Sudden strain or lifting weights incorrectly
Common symptoms of sciatica
Pain that radiates from the lower back to the leg
Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot
A burning sensation or electric shocks
Pain that worsens with prolonged sitting or driving
Difficulty standing up after sitting
Slight weakness or rapid fatigue in the leg (depending on the case)
See a doctor immediately if:
Sudden severe weakness in the foot or leg – rapidly increasing pain with severe numbness – loss of bladder or bowel control – severe pain after a fall or severe injury
Goals of physiotherapy:
- Exercises to reduce pressure on the nerve and gradually improve mobility
- Strengthening exercises for the core and deep back muscles
- Flexibility exercises for muscles that increase pressure on the nerve
- Training on proper sitting and sleeping posture and the correct way to bend over
- A simple and clear home exercise program to maintain between sessions
Why is home treatment beneficial?
Because sciatica is often linked to daily habits:
Car seat posture, sleeping position, sitting on a low sofa, or frequent bending can all contribute to these issues.
