Carpal tunnel
What is the carpal tunnel?
The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway in the wrist through which the median nerve and tendons of the hand pass.
When pressure is applied within this passageway (due to inflammation, repetitive strain, or poor posture), symptoms such as numbness, pain, and weakness in the hand may occur.
When do you need physical therapy for carpal tunnel syndrome?
Symptoms persisting for more than two weeks
Pain/tingling that noticeably increases at night
Gradual weakness in the hand or difficulty performing daily tasks
Symptoms return quickly after temporary improvement
Work that requires repetitive use of the hand (computer/mobile/tools)
Important note:
If sudden severe weakness , rapidly increasing numbness , or persistent severe pain develops —it is best to consult a doctor for evaluation (a nerve examination or splint may be necessary depending on the case).
Goals of physiotherapy:
- Exercises to improve nerve gliding safely
- Gradual flexibility and strengthening exercises for the hand and forearm muscles
- Correcting hand posture during work and sleep
- Guidelines for reducing pressure (such as regulating usage periods and adjusting the grip)
- A simple and clear home exercise program between sessions
Why is home treatment beneficial?
Because the cause of the problem is often related to daily habits at home and at work:
Using your phone for extended periods, the mouse, lifting objects, or sleeping position can all contribute to this.
At home, we can review and practically adjust your posture and create exercises that suit your tools and routine—this accelerates improvement and reduces symptom recurrence.
